Healthy
competition between students can expand and enhance the educational
experience. GASC offers participation in a number
of Student Organizations as a part of our curriculum. Membership
in a Student Organization provides an opportunity for local,
regional and even national recognition of a student's work.
In many cases, scholarships are available to those who excel.
Teachers, support staff and employers help prepare GASC students
for various competitions held throughout the school year.
Membership also promotes leadership and teamwork skills.

Ford/AAA
Student Auto Skills
The competition
is cosponsored by AAA and Ford Motor Company. It objective
is to encourage talented young people to pursue careers as
automotive service technicians. This is a nationwide competition
for 11th and 12th grade students in secondary schools.
Each
automotive instructor may enter a team of up to eight students.
The participating teams take a written examination which is
administered by the Department of Education in each state.
The combined score of the two highest scoring students from
each school becomes the team or school score and counts 40%
in the state finals. The ten teams scoring highest on the
written exam then move into the "hand-on" state
finals. In the "hands-on" competition, new Ford
Motor Company vehicles are uniformly "bugged" so
that each team has identical malfunctions to diagnose and
repair. The competition requires repairs to be made with the
highest quality workmanship in the lowest total time.
Students,
instructors, and schools win savings bonds, scholarships,
trophies, jackets, certificates, shop manuals, trips and automotive
equipment for their schools. Opportunities with the Ford ASSET
program will be available to many of the competition finalists.
Awards and recognition start with local competitions.
